Increases in the Methane Uptake of Upland Forest Soil in China Could Significantly Contribute to Climate Change Mitigation

Upland forest soil is an important CH4 sink that plays a key role in climate change mitigation. China features large areas of various types forest, but spatiotemporal variation flux has not yet been clarified. Here, we analyzed and the effects environmental variables on using situ observational data. absorbed at rate 0.24 ± 0.02 g m−2 yr−1. The uptake (0.46 0.10 yr−1) warm temperate deciduous broad-leaved was highest. Soil alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen only factor significantly correlated with among vegetation zones. A break point over study period (from 1997 to 2020) detected 2015. slightly decreased until 2015 increased after mean (0.44 0.07 higher than before (0.20 yr−1). Atmospheric deposition negatively related interannual uptake. Our findings suggest upland will continue increase next few decades as accelerates efforts achieve its carbon neutrality goal, this would result continuous decreases through pathways.
